that Speak to the Soul

Hi.

I’m a lifelong journalist who turned to fiction writing and memoir. I began my career working for The Jerusalem Report before joining Reuters and eventually the Globe and Mail as a columnist. I once got into a stranger’s car in a deserted part of Jerusalem to meet a spy. Another time, a photographer left me in an abandoned parking lot behind a crack house in Vancouver, where I found my best interview subjects.

You can’t make this stuff up. But there are some things that I still can. You’ll find both those elements here.

The Never Ending

Journalist Laura Haro is close to losing both her marriage and her job when news breaks that 12-year-old Missy Morgan has been kidnapped from her front yard in an exclusive enclave outside of San Francisco. Laura’s unconventional reporting style sends the story viral, but her obsessive coverage alarms her employer and threatens her relationship with her husband Mark and their daughter Dylan. Beneath it all, the kidnapping has triggered Laura’s long-forgotten talent for gematria, the kabbalistic understanding of how connected numbers provide a deeper understanding of the inner workings of the universe. As the police shift their focus to Missy’s family, the numbers point Laura to a different predator, and force her to re-examine a tragic moment in her youth that changed everything for her.

Numbers

Workaholic mother-of-one Laura Haro, the West Coast bureau chief of Global Publishing Network, is close to losing both her marriage and her job when news breaks that 12-year-old Missy Morgan has been kidnapped from her front yard in an exclusive enclave outside of San Francisco. As the police shift their focus to Missy’s family, Laura can’t shake the feeling that the numbers indicate a different predator: the leader behind a burgeoning cult targeting teens. Her investigation leads her back to her ultra-Orthodox upbringing in Toronto and the death of her best friend Elisheva. As Laura rediscovers the person she was before work, marriage, and motherhood, she is forced to acknowledge how this tragedy and others are linked —a cycle only she can stop by saving this one missing girl.

An ancient wisdom forces its way into the very modern life of a journalist in San Francisco, who believes that secret numbers are revealing an even bigger story than a high-profile kidnapping.

Nobody cried for us

I recently stumbled on those words, spoken by my relative in her testimony for the Shoah Foundation in the late 1990s. They have never been more prescient.
